Notre-Dame de Paris

Paris, France. La cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, communément appelée Notre-Dame. Cette cathédrale catholique médiévale se situe sur l'île de la Cité, dans le IVe arrondissement. Sa construction débute en 1163 sous l'évêque Maurice de Sully et s'achève en 1345. Lors de la révolution française la cathédrale fut profanée et endommagée. Une restauration importante a eu lieu entre 1844 et 1864 sous la direction de l'architecte Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Celle-ci, parfois controversée, apporte des éléments inédits qui donnent à l'édifice un style qui n'est pas uniforme - on y trouve des éléments du gothique primitif et du gothique rayonnant. Notre-Dame est un des symboles majeurs de Paris. Le soir du 15 Avril 2019 un grave incendie détruit la toiture, la flèche de Viollet-le-Duc et la charpente du XIIIe siècle de la cathédrale.

The Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, meaning "Our Lady of Paris" and commonly called Notre-Dame, is a medieval catholic cathedral situated on the Île de la Cité in the fourth arrondissement of Paris. It's construction began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and achieved in 1345. Notre-Dame was desecrated and damaged during the French revolution years, starting 1789. An important restoration took place between 1844 and 1864. This sometimes considered controversial restauration project was supervised by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and added novel elements to the edifice, making it somewhat disharmonious. Notre-Dame is one of the major symbols of Paris. In the evening of April 15th, 2019 a major fire destroys the roof, the XIIIth century woodwork and the flèche of Viollet-le-Duc - the timber spire situated over the crossing.
