Al Deir (Le monastère) est, avec le Khazneh, l'un des bâtiments les plus connus de Petra. C'est le plus gros avec une façade de 45m de large et 42m de haut. Il était probablement lié au rite funéraire du roi nabatéen Obodas I, divinisé. L'urne qui se trouve à son sommet mesure 9m de haut.
